Slowly but surely...

It's been a week since my last post, and I don't have a lot to say for myself.  I am plugging along on my shawl at a snail's pace.  I am quite enjoying the actual knitting part of this project, and I'm not just powering through to add something new to my wardrobe (although it will be nice when it's finished...).  I have been really busy in the evenings after school and my social schedule has been packed relatively full so it doesn't leave much time for knitting.  Here is some progress, about 35% finished:

Lovely view, don't you think?

Close-up, it looks quite ribbed and 3D, but by the time I finish and block it out, it ought to be bigger and smooth.  We'll see!

Today when I got home from work, I opened my door and found quite an exciting surprise.  I usually hope that there will be some mail waiting for me, but rarely does a package actually get jammed through the mail slot!!  Luckily, my mailman was feeling adventurous and jammed a soft envelope all the way through.

Thank you, High Energy Jenny!!

I really like this yarn, and I'm thinking a spring scarf might be just what this girl needs!  Surprise yarn in the mail, does life get much better than this?

In other news, today I finished The Lovely Bones.  The big letdown is that I only started it yesterday.  I hate when I finish a good book so quickly!  These two days have been rather exceptional at work, because it's finals time at the end of the academic year, and since I still don't know my academic schedule for next year, there isn't anything for me to do at work.  Yesterday I brought my computer to work and did all sorts of ridiculous stuff like covet every item at anthropologie and update my amazon wishlist.  Then I started the book, which my friend lent me yesterday morning, and I read the rest of it today.  I think it's the first time that I've read a decent sized book in less than 24 hours.

It's depressing because now I have nothing to read again.  I really like to read books like this one and The Kite Runner, but there are a lot of books that I just can't get into.  Any suggestions of good books I should include in my next Amazon order?

I just finished "The Life of Pi" by Yann Martel last night - it was so good I stayed up until 2am to finish and with a whopper of a cold, ta boot! Also, one of my all time favorites is "The Poisonwood Bible" by Barbara Kingsolver. Awesome read and it will *definitely* take longer than 24 hours to read!

I loved Lovely Bones! It's one of those books that just sucks you in, so you kind of HAVE to get through it. I just started Kite Runner the other day. Lesseeee, I really like Richard Russo: Empire Falls, Straight Man. He has quirky characters, almost always a phlegmatic male protagonist. Not much happens in his books, but I love them just the same! Have you read Motherless Brooklyn by Jonathan Lethem? LOVED THAT BOOK. Not as crazy about The Fortress of Solitutde by him. And how about nonfiction? Candyfreak by Steve Almond was actually better than I had expected. Can you guess what it's about?

I read "The Namesake" by Jhumpa Lahiri, and that was really good. I'd definitely recommend it (and I second the recommendation of "Life of Pi" by Meg.

I have "The Namesake", if you'd like me to bring it. I haven't read it yet, but that may solve the 'what to read on the plane' question.

So so glad you like the yarn! You are more than welcome. Thanks for being a great blog-buddy. Hope you can make something good with it.

un peu de français, bravo pour ton blog qui fait rêver. j'ai créer mon blog aussi http://mangotricote.canalblog.com

ooh pretty yarn! :)

Did Lovely Bones make you cry? I just bawled my eyes out!

I loved Caramelo by Sandra Cisneros. I am also obsessed with this fantasy series by Anne Bishop. It has a cheesy cover but it is TOTALLY ENGROSSING. I can't put the darn thing down and I have read it already! (there is also a new book out that has a few stories about the same characters...)

I have those two and my other favorite books linked on my favorites page:
